I've gotten off to a slow start with my writing in 2010 and I'm planning on picking that up soon. Just wanted to drop a quick note in today just to check in and see if you've made your goals for this year. I have been focusing on developing a plan for the year, i've had a profitable but not quite as great of a start to the year as I've wanted so far for myself but I think that will pickup in the next few days. I was doing some coaching yesterday, and I noticed something that my student was doing over and over that hurting his game so I wanted to write a quick tutorial.. FLUSHDRAW... I see people jam all in everytime they have a flush draw. This is just not a profitable move. Let me present some scenarios, and I used www.pokerstove.com to come up with some pot equities for these. ou have Q8 hearts on the BB, theres 2 limpers and a small blind in. The flop comes AK6, and the K6 are hearts.. sb checks, what do you do? Well lets look at the hand.. what are our outs? and what is our equity vs the 2 limpers Scenario 1: A - We have 9 outs, and thats if we are not up against a higher flush draw which is possible here with the Ax of clubs. I put them both on a range of the top 25% of hands and ran the scenario in pokerstove Our current equity is: 33.3%, Scenario 2, lets say we check and the 2nd limper jams all in for the same stack as useveryone else folds, I ran some scenarios about the players possible holdings, the only thing we are really ahead of here is a smaller flush draw. Equity = 36.6%.. do you want to consistently be calling all of your chips with a 36.65 chance to win?I see this happening all the time. Now.. When can we call or jam an all in flush draw? Next hand A8clubs on the BB, flop is 10,9,6, the 9 and the 6 are clubs. Now,  the difference here is, when a player bets, we have a- a draw to the nuts, b- a gutshot str8 draw, and also in many cases, our A is good. So, we are looking at as many as 15 outs, which is a favorite to win the hand, 605 to 40%. Let's put our opponent on a hand and run some scenarios, I would guess A-10, K10, Q10, J10, 10-9, possibly an overpair to the board, Aa, KK, Qq, JJ, or a smaller flush draw, also a set of 10's, 9s, or 6's. So, lets run this range in poker stove. Equity vs all of these hands, even the oboverpairs and sets is at least 50.5% So you can see by looking at your outs, putting your opponent on a hand, you can often find similar looking flush draw that some have alot of value and some have very low value. I don't like to race for all my chips on a flush draw for even a 50% possibility but in some cases, if youve got a large stack and can gamble, or a small stack and want to gamble then these are ok. I would, on the other hand try to stay away from the 36% flush draws. Final tips Good rules of thumb Be careful of the following: A- Don't go all in drawing for something less than the nut flush, B- Don't draw to a flush when there's a pair on the board. You could be drawing dead. C- Don't draw to a flush that doesn't also have overcards and/or at least a gutshot str8 possibility. Give yourself more winning out possibilities than just the flush and you'' find yourself winning in these scenarios more than 50% of the time. D- Now if you ever flop yourself a 15out str8 and a flush draw, and sometimes youll have 1-2 overcards as well, which give you up to 21 outs, don't be afraid to get your money in with the best of it, you at worst a 60% favorite here, and could be up to 80% with over 20 outs. Hope these ideas give you some ideas on how to play flush draws for your whole stack wiz twitter @wizardmickey Yahoo IM: wizardmickey33

I wanted to introduce a site i just using called www.chipmeup.com This is a poker staking site, you can go in, drop some$ in through paypal or other methods and stake small shares of players. From our site, Me, (WIZRDMICKEY) and LTUFlawless are both listed in there and have tourneys posted. I started posting some of the 3750 guarantees I play at 5pm a few days a week and also I will be posting some LIVE larger buyin events I will be playing in. If you signup for the site, please use "WIZRDMICKEY"  (watch the spelling) as your referrer and then put me in your watchlist. You can buy shares for events for as low as 3-4.00 for the 3750 event.  A 4.00 share will payout about 8.00 for a cash and 35.00 for a win for each share. I am also trying to sell 30% of myself for a LIVE event at the Poker Room here in Jacksonville Fl called the Chad Brown Classic, its an 880.00 BUYIN EVENT I will be playing Jan 30th so check that one out too. Great value there for that tourney I think. Alot of lower level players will be in that tourney with free giveaways at the poker rooms in North Florida and radio entries mixed with alot of local celebtrities that cant play worth a squat.   Thanks for checking it out!   Wiz

My month/year is starting off a little slow so ive been trying to get back to the basics, one of the ways that I do this is analyze hands that im in with versus the range of my opponents. Some free software you should have and should download if dont have it is www.pokerstove.com. At first glance, this looks basic and youll be like, well, how could I use this in a real world situation. Granted, alot of what this software does is give you detailed information, in hindsite. Well... that doesnt do you any good in the middle of a tourney. But.. what it can do is teach you, you also can make some charts to help yourself know the strength of your hand in real-time or use the model I designed below. I use 4 different models of ranges, you should goto pokerstove and type in these percentages to see the hand ranges I am discussing. A This is general range of player either limping or opening a pot, in pokerstove, it consists of approx the top 32.9% of all hands B Loose raising range -- this could be used by first player entering pot from mid- late position in a 8-10 handed game, this range consists of approx the top 20.4% of all hands C Early position raising hands, this range is for an early position raise in a 8-10 man game, primarily I am talking about tournaments with approx 20-30x blind structure, this range consists of approx  the top 12.4% of all hands D Lastly is your tight range, this range will usually be a reraise, all in shove, or bubble playable hand vs a raise, this range consists of approx the top  4.2% of all hands. Now.. what you should do is start to look at hands that you could have and how would they play against these ranges. Your next step in a tourney when entering a pot, raising into a pot, reraising or moving all in versus an opponent is trying to put them on one of these 4 ranges of hands. You then should be analyzing how they play to give you a better idea of what ranges they already play and then determine the situation in the game and which they might be on. Then, you analyze your hand strength based on that range.  The idea is to try to get your money in with the best of most times.. You cant always win, but if you're consistently getting your money in with the best of it, youll win alot more.  Ill give some samples below and then you can go on and do your own. opponents projected range->    A   32.9%          B 20.4%                C 12.4%            D 4.2% My hand - percent equity         78suited *                                      37.9%                       36.7%                  34.8%                  27.7% 55                                                      49.1%                       45.7%                    42.7%                31.5% 1010                                                 64.4%                     55.2%                     54.2%                 41.2% A6 **                                                47.3%                     42.7%                     37.2%                 27.1% AJ                                                      59.6%                      55.57                      48.7%                 31.2% KQ                                                     52.9%                     49.4%                     43.1%                  31.2% AQ                                                     61.9%                      58.9%                     54.1%                  34.2% AK                                                    64.7%                      62.5%                     59.9%                  43.8% AA                                                    84.9%                      84.5%                     84.6%                  82.8% * includes other suited connectors from 2-3s to 9-10suited ** would also include other A-rag hands like A2-A8 Try to put this to use when you're looking at your hand in different areas of the tourney and wondering where you are vs other players in the hand. This will help you play "theoretically" better poker, what I mean by that is playing your hand perfectly as if you knew what the other player was holding. PART 2 --------------------------------------------------- HAving a conversation about this with a buddy and I came up with some more scenarios... Lets say youre in a tourney... youre either huge stacked or maybe pretty shortacked and you need to gamble to tripleup to get back in for a run... So a mid position raisers goes all in, we will give him the B range of 20.4% of the best hands.. so youre on the small blind, all of the sudden the button goes all in also for the same chips.. We assume he has a better hand range and we will give him a range of  C the top 12.4% of hands. You could either have a small, stack wanting to triple, medium stack in which case youre going to have to consider this calling option alot more carefully, or possibly have them both covered by 3-1, in which case you might consider calling to knock them both out. S0.. we will run the same hands above, but we will check our equity vs both of these opponents with the same group of hands. Your pot equity in a 3 handed all-in vs a B level estimated range and a C level estimated range with the following hands... So youre over 50% chance to lose the hand in the sitation with all of these but AA, but youre also 26% to win the hand with even a suited connector.. worth the consideration  in some situations. 78s 26.9% 55   29.5% 1010 38.4% A6   23.7% AJ  32.2% AQ  36.8% AK  41.9% AA 73.6% Knowledge is power, odds and what you know and how you use them are a huge part of this game, consider them carefully in your decision making. wizrdmickey Yahoo IM wizardmickey33 twitter @wizardmickey

If you have read part1 and especially part deuce yet.. read those first.. some very important precursor information and an outline to the next few chapters listed there. So, you got your warpaint, you got your background changed to camouflage, you're psyched.. Guess what, that doesn't make you a bad ass. You have to train and qualify to be classified a  Poker commando. Training -- What have you done to qualify to be playing in the game your playing in? I dont know if youre familiar with the training that a special forces candidate goes through to qualify for a team but let me tell you its weeks of hell. You need to commit yourself to your weeks of poker training to get in the right mindset. The ways you do this are: 1- Study, reading blogs like this is the first step. You should have a library of poker books, and not just for show. You need to spend and hour or 2 a day studying and making notes. Every poker book has something new, even one new concept you can add to your game is worth the price of the book. Don't stop with the first read, go through these booksover and over to help let these new concepts sink in. Take notes of the things you read on note cards and keep these "key concepts nearby when youre playing. When you start to go through a struggle, pick them up, read them and get back to the basics. 2- Your training should also include learning odds, this blog and book will not be numbers based for the most part, but knowing the odds are the basis of the game, its crucial that you search them out and learn how to include them in your game. 3- Read blogs and articles online, Cardplayer magazine and the 2+2 forums are a place you should be spending 20-30 minutes a day reading. 4- Lastly, practice, there was a time when I was learning position play, that I would put a post-it note over my computer screen so i couldnt see my cards and try to win 5.00 sngs like that. Now that takes skill.  Position skill, if you can get headsup, then take your post it note off the screen win a tourney like that and you are ready to play some 20-30-50.00 sit and go's 5 Bankroll.. if you've got 100.00, dont jump into a 10.00 tournament, try to always keep your buyins around 1/20 of your bankroll. Build it up slow, dont go for a big score until youre ready to play in that game and you have the bankroll to back it up. 6- Fitness, before you plan on having patience and brainpower to sit through hours of tournament play you need stamina. I would reccomend a 30 -45 minute workout every day before you start playing to get your body and mind in a good place. 30 min on the stairmaster is a good start, if youre in better shape already, a 30-45 min jog and some weights might be the way you prepare for a session. 7- Recon - Notetaking on your regular opponents is a prime way to have a headsup on the competition. See my article on this site about taking notes on players to get more information on what I think your notetaking should look like.             wizrdmickey   twitter @wizardmickey yahoo IM  wizardmickey33

I had a conversation with one of my buddies today who also plays here and we were discussing note taking. i thought I would put my thought out here because I dont know if everyone understand what  type of notes that should be taking on other players. This site is small enough where good notetaking is a valuable piece of information that you shouldnt be avoiding. When you take notes, you want to put information in there that will help you everytime you see them. If you just say, well "this guy is a bluffer" that doesnt really help you because next time you play him, he might not be bluffing. You need to take the time to give yourself more context of the situation, when does he bluff? Was it a continuation bet? Did he fire 2-3 bullets? or did he stop betting when he got called. This is much more valuable information. here's some notes from my IM conversation about note taking...   Chuck Myers: the notes u need to be getting are, hands they played from early position, and ways they bet hands Chuck Myers: slowplay, do they C bet Chuck Myers: stuff like that too Chuck Myers: if u see someone limp utg, try to check their hand on showdown, if u have to go back and check hand history Chuck Myers: then u know they play crap from utg u find out what kind of a player they are Chuck Myers: say they bet 5x bb, what hand was it Chuck Myers: youll be in their head after that Chuck Myers: bluffing is good, but get it in context to what the hand was Chuck Myers: bc any good player is going to bluff Chuck Myers: so u need to know the situation Chuck Myers: did he fire 3 bullets on a bluff, or just 1, etc etc Chuck Myers: here's a note I have on ***** Chuck Myers: early pos limper with 67off..   also saw him in with 35 utg, flops a str8 and doesnt bet gets sucked out on river by flush Chuck Myers: those are from some other day so now i know if i see him limp utg, i can raise with AJ late pos an not be worried he limped with  a monster Chuck Myers: also, make notes of big calling stations so u know now to bluff Chuck Myers: guys that make bad calls out of position Chuck Myers: or even in postion, that theyre a loose caller, or loose caller from the blinds Chuck Myers: or.. if u think they might think you play a certain way because hands u played vs them, not that, then next time play different in case they noted u   In closing: Types of notes you should take: 1 - what types of hands does he play from early position, does he limp with monsters 2- When he raises, what type of hands does he raise and how big, from what position? 3- Does he Continuation bet, will he fire multiple bullets on a bluff 4- Does he call out of position, or does he call with mediocre hands in posistion 5- What do his stats say in Sharkscope.com? does he make money? 6- Other special situation you saw him that differentiate him 7- How does he think I play, note that so you can play different next time 8- I also take notes on personality too, friendly, goes to school at wherever, played wsop of poker last year, married with a baby, drinks alot while playing, etc etc  wizrdmickey twitter  @wizardmickey yahooIM wizardmickey33

Reefer Blogs/Poker Strategy

For anyone interested, rooting for/against me, I figured i'd start an update blog for the Mtt leaderboard on the network that I am trying to grind out and win this month. Hitting about 8-12 trneys a day. My strategy is to hit a couple of 1000-1250 guars and play fast to get a chipstack or bust out since I need 1st-2nd in those to get any sustainable points. Then, I focus harder on the noon 33.00 1250guar freeze , 2pm 22.00 1000guar with rebuys, 5pm 50.00 3750 guar with rebuys, 830 33.00 2250 guar, 930 50.00 1500 guar with rebuys, and 1030 15.00 1500 guar with rebuys. They take the top 25 points totals of the month, which means the later in the month, the less you can make per tourney because even if you score 25-30 points, you still have to offset your lowest total of 25 best scores.  My GOAL for the month is to hit 1313 pts and break the record of 1312 for a month at least as far back as a year set by one of my nemesis's "yamutta".  I think I can hit 1200 at least which should be a leaderboard winner.   My daily updates will be below.  On a personal note, I am having fun with this and and committing myself to this goal this month. I t might be a long time before I play this hard/long every day and ill prob take a break in Jan. I'm sure I'll remember this month for the rest of my life because its going to be a grind. As of today, the 11th,  I haven't shaved for 4 days, its friday and i've left my house once this week, and showered like twice... i think. Literally start at 10am and play till after 1am most days with almost no breaks in between tourneys if I am running well. Saturday, Tomorrow night after the 3750 is going to be a night out for UFC107 so ill give them a shot at gaining some ground! ------- Daily notes: Sat Dec 12 -- Ughh burned out today - need a break tonight. Nothing working today, playing bad, all coinflips losing probably done after the 1000guar. tomorrow start fresh with noon tourney. Try to pull some $/points in this 1000and get out w a profit today. --         Update its now 9:20p.. things turned around, i won the 500g 60buyin, 7th in the 1000g and decided to jump in the 3750 afterall.. 4h15m later, i take it down.. points are thru the roof now. Im off to ufc, JAGERBOMBS ON ME! see ya all tomorrow Dec 13.. rough day from noon till the 2130 50.00 buyin 1500guar trny.. made a run and got 2nd, and then third in the 2230 1500 guar so points jumped a little.. 2nd place gained some ground today. (Payge749) She wont talk to me at the tables.. kind of funny actually.  What a weekend, bring on Monday! Dec 14 -- Day started good - Won the noon 1250.. cracked over 1000 pts and back over 200 pt lead. Playing 3750 now. Might stop after this for the night. Update later. Good night.. Very bittersweet 2nd place in the 2130 1500guar.. had the guy down to nothing heads-up and he managed to get back and win. Oh well +478 wasnt horrible. points are getting tougher to addup now with almost 100 mtts for the month already. Good $$ day! Dec 15 - Good start got 2nd in early morning 5.00 500guar testing new software update, then 2nd in the noon 1250 what a headsup battle with 007Chriskardiac then 3-4 major suckout s in the 1330 1500g 1010 beats my QQ and A0 beats my AQ so i cash but only 7th.  Live poker tonight so I am done for the day online. Will update totals tonight. UPDATE nice 200 point lead.. Wednesday full day12-15 trneys.. watch me increase this lead. Goal 1100 amd get ahead by 250. I will be in every guaranteed trney over 15.00 tomorrow between 10:00 am and 22:30pm. Holler at me on Twitter @wizardmickey Dec 16 -- Just a bad day.. late tourney suckouts, ugly, runner runner stuff.. i wont bore u with details.. cashed twice small, lost $ on the day first time in awhile. didnt really gain any points today. renewed focus tomorrow. Cant win every day. Dec 17 -- Only had time for morning tourneys.. won the 10am, 3rd in the noon, and bubbled the 60 buyin 500guar. Good points made some $$. Full schedule friday all day and night. Dec 18 - Won the 1000guar at 1430 today.. got some good needed points. Had a good run going in the 3750 but guy won an all in with A5 vs my A10 and i got upset and played bad after that, something i dont usually do. I have some new competition in the race 007chriskardiac is around 200 pts behind but coming on strong, seems we battle in every tourney. Real solid player and we were headsup for tourney wins this week which we split. so we will be keeping our eye on him, just 13 days left and They im still on target for the 1313+  pt goal. They are harder to get now though with this many tourneys, a 50 pts win might only give me 30 points because they have to take away my worst finish of the 25.Big day tomorrow, another one like last saturday I hope. play the 12:00, 13:00 5kguar, 1430 1000, 1530 500guar, and the 3750 and then call it a day. 12/19 long day.,,, couldnt get much going.. one small cash early... jumped in the 2030 2250guar.. started off good then couldnt hold, paid 5 tonight, got to the final table in 8th, stayed shortstack all the way through till 3, got the chiplead and finally took it down 5minutes before my birthday!!! woot +900 happy birthday me! Playing 007chriskardiak, great player,  we both made final table of the 2250 he is definitely after 1st also. 12-21 day started off good, third in the 1250, but i made a really bad call with KQ that cost me first place when i was way in the lead so i was pretty upset, and i think it made me play impatientall day, couldnt get anything else going. Or at least couldnt close anything down. player ussie08 closing in on me in the pts race i got to boost, ill be grindin heavy over the holiday  so hopefully i can extend it enough to close the deal. 12-22 could only play daytime todaybecause i have live poker tonight, got a 2nd in the 1250guar at noon, and only got me about 8 points. Just goes to show how tough it is to move up points now. I need wins only. My goal is to win each of the big tourneys at least once in the next week. Ill make a list below and check it off when I win it. Will update points later im right around 90 points up while writing this. 12-23 off to a good start won the noon 1250.. busted over 1200 points just 110 pts to record and goal. 12-24 - Another cash in the noon 1250, this time 2nd, was a great finish since I got nocked down to 3000 chips with 7 left and managed to duck and dodge my way back up to third. Few more points, hitting hte homestretch now on xmas day. If I can either hit or avoid someone else hitting a big weekend score in the big tourneys I should be able to hold. 12-25 played just 2 trneys on xmas didnt cashplanning full sat and sunday schedule 12-26 4th in the noon 1250, and had a good run in the 5k guarantedd for third , huge chiplead at final table and i got in 2 drawing situations and missed both. Both vs AA and one had 15 outs and other had 14outs and both missed so i dont feel too bad about it. third paid well, moved up 30 pts in leaderboard. Just 73 away from the record. Maybe a big run in the 50k guar tomorrow. Done for the day  5 saturdayat, relaxand get ready for a 4 day push starting noon sunday. 12-27  nothing early.. lost with KK vs AA with a big stack in the 50K.. jumped into a big 3750 with 47 players and pulled down a 2nd. Points at 1279, 34 to go to the record. I feel like I have the TLB locked up but I want to beat the 1312 record in the next 4 days. Wow nightly 1500 tourney.. ended up with third had a huge lead, lost a couple of hands then got all in with JJ on 4410 board, guy calls with K10 and of course hits a K so I go out in third. 1st wouldve sealed me over 1312 points. Ended with 1284 on the day. 12-28 got behind on my updates --- 4th in 1250 --   2nd in the 500guar 8 man no points 12-29 good day.. hit first in the 1430 and busted over 1300 pts, i need 7 in the next 2 days to break the leaderboard record of 1312 12-30 - just trying for one more big finish today or tomorrow.. need a win or 2nd in one of the tourneys listed below to hit my 1313 goal. Amazing what u can do when you set your mind to it. I think I proved it to myself this month. I am a little burned out so Im tring to hit the record and take a couple days off the rest of the week and enjoy some live poker and football games. Have a great month profitiably as well and I guess that goes along with it, funny ive been more concerned about top finishes for points esp last couple of weeks when just cashing doesnt really give me many new points. After I win the leaderboard and get the accolade for winning I;ll go back to playing for profits! Also looking at doing some more coaching next month. if youre interested, don;t be afraid to hit me up on IM or twitter and tell me what youre looking for. I'm easy to work with and not expensive, a little poker coaching is worth its weight in gold, you can improve your play and profits by 10x for a a week of training.  I prefer to look at total tourney or sng hand histories, one of the guys im working with now, i critique hands before I see the result of the hand and I think that is a good way to do it. Ill see his cards, and his preflop play, then ill pause and write my thoughts, and then finish the hand and critique how it played out. Good way to learn. I like it because it helps me evaluate my own play as well. 12-31` -- ok the last day is here.. I dont see any possibility of losing the lead.. or even anyone hitting within 100 pts of me.. But. the pressure is on me.. i need 7 points to beat the 1312 leaderboard point record. I need a first or possibly a 2nd to make those points. I am going to play 3 trney, possibly 4 before midnight. the way this leaderboard works is.. when it turns midnight.. its over, doesnt matter if youre in a tourney.  So.. noon 1250, 14:30 1000guar, and 1700  3750guar are my 3 biggies. Lets do it today! Happy New Year! 12-31 UPDATE - 830 PM.. Finished 4th in the 3750 waiting for point to update, when they do... BOOM 1315 pts! RECORD by 3!  What a month, what a goal, What an accomplishment for me. Hope everyone has a safe and Happy New year..  Feel free to hit me up on twitter or Yahoo IM, or Yahoo email. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on the table. --------------------------------- After Date     #trneys    total points      Place   lead over #2       cash's         12/7                 36             580                        3          9 12/8                 43             639                         1         12 12/9                 54            711                          1          28 12/10             65            758                           1         88     ---> go go go        (huge day 3 outright wins) 12/11              75            834                           1       152    2nd, 5th, and 2 bubbles, big point day, low$ 12/12            80             935                           1       232  1st in 500g, 7th in 1000g, and 1st in 3750 12/13            90           982                               1       181    2nd in 21:30 1500g   , 3rd in 22:30 1500g 12/14           98             1037                          1      214  1st in noon 1250, 2nd in 21:30 150012/15    12/15          105           1057                           1       206      2nd in noon 1250  12/16       113              1057                            1      173   2 small cashs-3 major suckouts late in trneys 12/17        118               1090                         1    180   won the 10am 1000, 2nd in the noon 1250 12/18          126        1115                                  1    173 won the 14:00 $1000 guar 12/19             132     1164                             1     170     10th in something, 1st in the 2250guar 12/20        136            1164                            1   121   didnt play much -- 12/21       142             1168                             1     93    third in noon1250guar 12/22           147     1178                              1   103   2nd in noon 1250 1/23          153              1203                        1  128    1st in noon 1250 guar, 7th in 2250guar 1/24          160           1210                       1    131        2nd in noon 1250 1/25         162              1210                    1        131 1-26           165             1241                     1      121   4th in noon 1250, 3rd in 5k guaranteed 1-27        169               1284                      1     173   2nd in 3750, 3rd in nightly 1500  1-28     172             1284                   1    173         4th in 1250, and 2nd in 500guar (8man) 1-29      175             1306                1        195   1st in the 1430 1000guar 1-30    184            1306                    1     159     5th in 1250, 2nd in 500guar (15:35), 6th in 1500g 1-31 189               1315  *GOAL*                 1        168   4th in the 3750 guar            twitter  @wizardmickey wizardmickey33@yahoo.com yahoo - wizardmickey33
