ZonkerHarris - $68K Bad Beat Jackpot Winner I am going to assume that most of the Reefer regulars recognize my screen name, as this has been my online hangout since early 2008. Until very recently, my claim to Reefer Poker fame has been that I am the current leader on the weekend 420 leader board. My kids and a few of their friends are all currently giving Reefer a lot of publicity in our town, sporting the tees and hats that I have won. I haven't seen any of the bumper stickers on the sheriff's cars yet, but it could happen. (just wear gloves kids). I like to think that my game is in decent shape, although there are probably a number of you that would argue the point, but I am always trying to improve on it. I have always been able to play winning poker enough to maintain a fluctuating bankroll without reloading, but this last weekend I was able to vastly improve on that. It seems that they have an interesting promotion here, where if you are involved in a "bad beat" at certain ring games, you can hit the jackpot. How cool is that? Get paid, instead of just beat up! And paid I got, to the tune of almost $69k. That's k, as in thousand, as in a butt load of money, it still hasn't really sunk in yet money. I suppose that it would sink in if I get it all in $100 bills and sleep with it, but then I would probably end up with one of those 4-hour woodys and have to go to the hospital. We'll see. How this all came about was that over the last few months I was able to build my bankroll up to around $1,000, mostly by playing in my normal small buy-in tourneys. I do try to keep up with the size of the bad beat jackpot, but as you know, it takes a decent size bankroll and you have to be on your game to play .50-1.00 nl ring game, or watch your bankroll go poof! Anyhoo, I was feeling my oats, and I had just had a dream that I had won the jackpot the night before (no lie), so I figured, what the hell! I played for a bit and did ok, so I worked up to 4-tabling, which normally for my feeble brain is about 3 1/2 too many. With 4 tables on one screen, the only way I could pull it off is to have them in mini-mode with no chat windows open. Then, the phone rang. It was my father, so I answered, which basically overloaded my circuits. For a few minutes I was so distracted that I couldn't even sit out of the games. I just put it on auto pilot, and kept folding or acting in some way at each table in turn. I was just about ready to start shutting down the tables so I could converse when one of the tables got all weird. I had pocket 10s, and flopped a set, with 2 8s. The other guy left had flopped quad 8s, but I thought that I was shoving with my set over his. The turn was a blank, I rivered the case 10, and the screen went all crazy. I actually didn't really know what had happened. My phone conversation, already pretty choppy, came to a complete stop. My other three tables were still chugging along, so I started closing them down so I could figure out what the hell was happening. Finally, I said, "Dad, I'm going to have to call you back. I think I just won $70k". I always wonder what some of the people that I see a lot on line do for a living, that they can be online so much. Here is why I can. I am not one of those kids who got into poker by watching Rounders, or the Moneymaker effect, but, like others from my era, by watching westerns like Maverick, or Alias S&J, etc. Started out playing a lot of kitchen table poker, .25 stuff. Moved up to a home game, which has been going on with a couple of us for something like 25 years. A few years back, I kinda stuck a fork in the ole toaster, as it were. I took a fall from like, too far up, landed head-first. Needless to say, it did not work out so well for me. A month in I.C.U. and a couple more in recovery/rehab and I ended up, shall we say "mobility challenged". It did free up some time to play poker, but if there were no internet poker, I would probably be bored out of my mind. So what is everyone else's excuse? I have most of the things that money can't buy, like a wife of 29 years, and three of the most awesome kids ever, so I will use this money for the stuff that money can buy, like, living stuff. Playing in the WSOP is on my bucket list, so if I can parlay this into a seat, I will see you there. I'll be the one in the Reefer Poker hat and shirt. * Up till now, my most memorable bad beat was having four Aces get beat by runner runner, one outers Royal Flush. Think about the odds of that. It was in a tourney, not a jackpot table, so all I got there was beat. * My favorite pro players are Greg Raymer, always a gentleman and poker advocate; Phil Laack and Antonio, because they are a hoot and always have a good time, especially when they are tormenting Hellmouth; Jenn Harmon, and Huck Seed, with the coolest name in poker.
